The Boutique

Bed & Breakfast, 5 stars
#45 Aguinaldo Highway
Tagaytay City
Tagaytay City
Philippines

Notes

from Click the City.com http://guides.clickthecity.com/travel/?p=1406

After several years of the ‘oldies but goodies’ destination spots in Tagaytay like Sonya’s Garden, Antonio’s and Taal Vista Hotel, to name a few, there’s finally a new kid on the block. With its crisp white façade and ultra modern interior, The Boutique Bed & Breakfast beckons all yuppies and yuppies-at-heart to experience an ‘emotional’ attachment to their hotel, which I described to a friend as something like The W and a quaint inn rolled into one fabulous space along Aguinaldo Highway.

There are a lot of quirky and unique details within The Boutique. The most noticeable one is the lack of room numbers. In lieu of digits, the owners (or ‘boutique-keepers,’ as Allana and Happy like to be called) have named each room after an emotion: (I) dare, dream, desire, lust, love, surrender, and escape.

The Boutique Bed Breakfast

I was lucky enough to get the I love room (with a sublime view of Taal volcano and the outdoor eating area, P5,950 on weekdays, P6,950 on weekends), but I’m thinking that the room’s availability had a lot to do with the fact that not very many people hightail to Tagaytay on a Tuesday.

The I love room – as do all the other rooms at The Boutique – comes with the hotel’s standard amenities, which is an impressive high-tech laundry list that consists of a wall-mounted LCD t.v., iPod dock, DVD player, and three albums worth of DVDs for me to watch in case I needed something to do throughout my overnight stay. Perhaps what many guests will find the most convenient at The Boutique is their free Wi-fi internet access in every nook and cranny of the premises. I was able to communicate with my boss throughout the afternoon on yahoo messenger and clean-out the day’s e-mail inbox while munching on a mouth-watering plate of baby back ribs at the hotel’s on-site barbecue restaurant, Hawaiian Barbecue (P350.00 for a medium platter, good for 2). The meat was tender, prying itself away from the bone with a mere touch of the fork - I highly recommend making a trip to The Boutique just to have a taste of this finger-lickin’ good platter.

The Boutique Bed Breakfast

If you’re the kind of person who takes note of hotel bath amenities, then you’re going to have a field day at The Boutique. Before settling into a guestroom, the copper shantung wrap-clad ladies at reception will usher you into their exhibit of hair, body and scented products from the hotel’s Pamper Me line, which you’ll pick-out for your own use (don’t worry, it’s included in the room price already). When you get the chance, take a whiff of the Chocolate Vanilla scrub (P250.00) – it’s sweet enough to eat. But don’t because I’m not so sure it’s edible. All of the items in the shop are for sale, perfect for pasalubong or for your own personal use.

The Boutique Bed Breakfast

Breakfast (in bed and for two, mind you) is served 24-7 here and is inclusive in the room price. I enjoyed mine at a regular hour, complete with a glass of orange juice, fruit platter, bread basket, and waffles with scrambled eggs while watching the Today Show, comfortably wrapped in the warmth of my goose down comforter. I stayed in bed for another hour until, alas, Manila beckoned.

Sonya's Garden

Bed & Breakfast, 5 stars
Barangay Buck Estate
Alfonso
Cavite (near the vicinity of Tagaytay City)
Cavite

Notes

Time was when rumors of a secret garden tucked in the gentle rolling hills of Tagaytay inevitably sneaked into conversations of Manila’s inner circle on what is new and exotic.  Stories were told in awe and delight about a flower garden planted in “organized chaos” yet soothingly pleasing to the eye, as if choreographed with artistic perfection. And then there is the simple yet incredibly filling country cuisine with fresh and organically grown ingredients from the garden, served in fine tableware that complements the idyllic setting. Then there is Sonya herself with her memories of growing up in her grandmother’s country garden in the Philippines, her life as an expat in Europe and the US, and her dreams of carving out a place in the country where she can live her philosophy on “the art of doing nothing”.

This was supposed to be Sonya’s private paradise, open only to family and friends and eventually, friends of friends. But after much prodding from all who have enjoyed the country living experience to share with more people what otherwise would have been her retirement lifestyle, she finally but reluctantly relented.  In February of 1998, she opened the doors of her secret garden to the public in time for Valentine’s Day. From then on Sonya’s has been host to a bevy of visitors; the tourist from a far off land who looks beyond the beaten path; the balikbayan looking for a familiar sketch of a memory of home; burned-out city-dwellers seeking respite from the din of the city; and practically anybody who is looking for something different yet strangely familiar. Of course, as a wonderful haven of romance, love blooms in Sonya’s garden like flowers of an eternal spring. Many romantics have found it to be a popular spot to disarm, to court and to propose. Some have even returned to say, “I do.” And with that, Sonya’s Secret Garden earned the reputation of being the worst kept secret in Manila.

Perhaps Sonya’s most generous gift yet is the opportunity for her guests to stay awhile in her private world thru her Bed and Breakfast facility were one can retreat to a charming cottage of their own.  Families or friends who wish to bond, couples on their nth honeymoon or just the tired soul longing for solitude and a bit of pampering - all have found their way to Sonya’s B&B. And to continue her quest for creating more spaces of serenity, Sonya also opened the SPA, a pampering salon where harried city folks are reminded to be kind to themselves once in a while.

This website is a tribute to Sonya and her sanctuary which she has kindly shared with us - we who have been touched, soothed, healed and inspired by the unforgettable experience that is Sonya’s Garden. She has once again agreed to break her privacy by allowing us, her friends, to share a part of her world again with those who have experienced it and with those about to discover its secrets.
